Resistance Training
Applying a force against a known resistance is resistance training.
Some types of resistance training that are relevant to Sprinting are;
- Therabands
Thera bands are used to engage certain muscles, for example, doing crabs walks, will engage an athletes gluteus and hips, as a force is applied against the side ways motion.
- Sled runs
Using weight against the force of an athletes run, can help them to build a greater top speed as well as greater explosive power through the legs.
- Hill runs
Hill runs use the resistance of the uphill to increase leg power, and train cardio vascular fitness.

Weight Training
Weight training can reduce the risk of injury as muscle stabilisers are going to be accustomed to a higher weight than just the bod weight which will make them more efficient. Sprinters try to strengthen certain movements or movement patterns that replicated a skill for example med ball throws can replicate the starting of a sprinter out of the blocks if the correct position is attained.
2 main weight trainings that will help to increase leg power is sprinting is;-
- Squatting
Squats are used to train and develop the strength of the gluteus and quadriceps, cresting more power in the explosive stage of the sprint.
- Dead lifting
Dead lifts are used to train quadriceps, gluteus, lower back and in small amounts hamstrings, the explosive nature of dead lifting helps with the start from the blocks in sprinting.
