Plantar Fasciitis
Plantar Fasciitis is the syndrome of inflammation/irritation of the tendon that runs along the arc of the foot and extends to the heel. This is a common syndrome that is very painful and often gets confused with heel spur, although it can later develop into a heel spur (a hook of bone that can appear on the heel bone). Plantar Fasciitis is more commonly seen in the middle-aged but can occur at any age. In sprinting it is thought that the repetitive nature of the sport damages the fibrous tissue under the arc of the foot. it is very common in novice athletes entering the sport, as they do not have the acute muscle strength in the arches of their feet in comparison to an elite athlete. For most athletes, it is the collapse of their arch or lack of strength in their feet. This can be helped through the use of orthotics or shoes that have greater arch support depending on the severity of the collapsing motion. Choice of wrong footwear can also make the severity of the injury worse, putting more strain through the tendon.
