Achilles tendonitis is the inflammation and irritation of a large tendon at the back of the ankle called the Achilles. Achilles tendonitis is generally caused through overuse. This overuse can lead to pain and swelling. 2 Main causes of Achilles Tendonitis are lack of flexibility through the ankle joint as well as the calf muscle, and overpronation of the foot (the rolling in of the foot). Both spread tightness through the Achilles tendon. This is most commonly caused in sprinting through a combination of overuse and flexibility issues, as well as having some cases of overpronation. Athletes may find that overpronation is facilitated through the use of wrong footwear causing their Achilles tendonitis. Progressively overloading too fast can cause the overuse of the calf muscle creating tightness that stems down to the Achilles tendon. Middle-aged athletes will be more susceptible to Achilles tendonitis, because like other tissues in the body as people age, tendons get less flexible more ridged and therefore more susceptible to injury.
Classifications;
Achilles Tendonitis can be classified as soft tissue injuries. There are three classification grade for Achilles tendonitis.

Achilles Tendonitis can be classified as soft tissue injuries. There are three classification grade for Achilles tendonitis.
- Grade I (Minor): Mild discomfort, through Irritation or inflammation of the surrounding tissue around the Achilles tendon.
- Grade II (Moderate): Inflammation or pain of the actual Achilles tendon (can be accompanied by a piercing sensation that occurs during activity).
- Grade III (Severe): The fibres in the tendon weaken and may snap or rupture.
